Cage Free at Last!

On Sunday, August 14, Animal Place (www.animalplace.org) rescued 700 egg-laying hens from a factory farm in Gilroy, where they were among 160,000 chickens destined for slaughter. The Marin Humane Society was asked to serve as an Adoption Center for these beautiful White Leghorns, who are presently experiencing the pleasures of sunshine, fresh air and grass for the first time in their short lives. Thanks to the positive response from the community, the Marin Humane Society and Animal Place went back to Gilroy on August 18 and rescued an additional 500 chickens, who are currently available for adoption here and at other humane societies.

The hens are 1-1/2 years old and will continue to lay eggs for the next five or so years. The adoption fee is $5.00 each, or $2.00 each when you adopt 5 or more.

Adopters must have adequate facilities to house these chickens as pets and egg layers only. Applications are currently being accepted and can be dowloaded below and faxed to (415) 382-1349. To have an application mailed or faxed to you, or for further information, please call (415) 883-4621 x365. Better yet, just come to the shelter in person (171 Bel Marin Keys Blvd., Novato).

Here is a list of the other humane societies that are adopting out some of these rescued hens:
