Books by MHS Staff:
Dog Sense is a Marin Humane Society publication written by Behavior and Training Director Trish King. Dog Sense is the perfect companion for our training classes and is written in an easy-to-understand format. Part 1 covers "The Canine Contract." Part 2 concentrates on "Problem-Solving" and Part 3 focuses on "Training."
Trish King is the Director of the Behavior & Training Department at The Marin Humane Society. Department programs include behavior consultations with the public, dog training classes (including classes for aggressive dogs), evaluations of adoption dogs and training classes specifically geared for dogs available for adoption. Trish has been instrumental in implementing innovative programs to help screen incoming animals and train dogs while they await adoption. Department staff includes 18 instructors and behavior counselors and 55 volunteer assistants.
Trish King teaches workshops and seminars on behavior, canine management, consultations, behavior evaluations and handling difficult dogs. She established the Canine Behavior Academy at The Marin Humane Society for new or interested trainers, a weekly program that covers training theory and techniques, handling dogs and teaching people. She is a member of the panel that put together the Delta Society's Professional Standards for Dog Trainers: Effective, Humane Principles. She has spoken nationally at several well-known venues, including APDT, HSUS and AHA conferences. Trish King wrote the dog training manual, DogSense, and a new book called Parenting Your Dog, which is now available in bookstores and online. She has created a series of videos encompassing various dog-related issues and concerns. These videos are beneficial to shelter workers, dog trainers and dog guardians.
Her videos can be purchased online at Tawzer Dog.
Applying parenting principles to nurture canine development is what Parenting Your Dog is all about. You'll learn ways to better understand your dog's demeanor and figure out what's going on inside his or her head. Trish King shows how dogs can adjust and become part of the family dynamic. Detailing the numerous similarities between child parenting and dog parenting, Trish provides an overview of a dog's physical, mental and emotional development in an easy-to-read format. An internationally renowned animal educator, Trish King also includes ways of dealing with aging and problem behaviors in your pup.
Parenting Your Dog makes training fun again and explains that sometimes the most important behavior to change is our own. This book is now available in our store or shop online at Amazon.com
