Troublesome Turkeys in Tiburon

Marin Humane Society reminds public not to feed wildlife

(NOVATO, CALIF., February 18, 2009) — A flock of 15 wild turkeys has become dependent on local homeowners for food, and as a result is creating a nuisance in the neighborhood of lower Hacienda Drive in Tiburon. The Marin Humane Society is issuing a reminder to the public that feeding non-captive wildlife is in violation of a county ordinance. MHS Animal Services Officers have responded to 20 calls from concerned residents of Hacienda Drive since early January and recently issued a citation to someone who had been feeding the turkeys despite warnings.

County Ordinance 8.04.226 was specifically designed for this scenario,” says Captain Cindy Machado, Director of Animal Services. “Some people find it hard to resist feeding wild turkeys, but that’s when trouble begins. A few stray visitors can soon become a flock of residents that have lost their natural fear of humans.”

Since this time of year is mating season, male toms are often more visible. Though not known to harm humans, some toms will display “aggressive posturing.” Wild turkeys in general can destroy landscaping, leave their droppings on patios, decks and cars, and peck and scratch cars.

“Encountering wildlife is a reality of living in Marin,” says Carrie Harrington, MHS Communications Manager. “Our goal is to promote a peaceful co-existence with our wild neighbors through the use of humane, non-lethal vexing techniques.”

If confronted by a wild turkey, the Marin Humane Society recommends the following:

  • Spray high pressure hoses
  • Blow a whistle or air horn
  • Wave your arms, shout, and make yourself appear larger
  • Open an umbrella or use a broom to help steer a turkey out of your path
  • Bang pots and pans

As always, the public is encouraged to report any nuisance wildlife to the Marin Humane Society at 415.883.4621.
