On-site Humane Education Programs K-12
These two hour programs are designed for each grade level, Kindergarten through High School, and are keyed to the California State Science, Math, and Social Studies frameworks. All workshops include a tour of the shelter and a curriculum follow-up packet. These programs also can be presented in the classroom.
Suggested donation (not required) $20.00 per class or students could coordinate a community service project and bring the proceeds to help the animals.

3rd grade: Dogs: From Lobo to Labrador

A close look at our pets who once were predators or prey.
5th grade: Scat!
All living things eat and poop. Find out how in this in-depth study of the digestive system.
6th-12th grade: Biodiversity and Evolution
See how diversity is needed to keep a population healthy and how living things must adapt to changing environments.
High School: Veterinary Medicine
Learn how animal care providers meet the emotional, mental, and physical needs of animals.

Outreach Humane Classroom Visits K-4
If you can’t make it to the shelter, why not have the shelter come to you? The Marin Humane Society offers a variety of presentations keyed to the California State Frameworks. Your classroom will be visited by an education docent and their trained animal ambassador.
Kindergarten - 3rd grade: "Playing It Safe With Dogs"
Short video followed by a questions and answer session on acting safely around dogs. Docent is accompanied by a SHARE approved animal ambassador.
Kindergarten: "The Five Senses"
Talks about a dog's senses and teaches the concept of senses through interactive material. Docent is accompanied by a SHARE approved animal ambassador.
Pre-school - 1st grade: "Sharing Sam"
A felt board presentation tells the story of a stray dog being found, brought to the shelter, and adopted. Also covers basic needs of pets and how similar they are to ours and provides an opportunity to practice meeting a dog. Docent is accompanied by a SHARE approved animal ambassador.
2nd grade: "Animal Heroes"
Focuses on people who have made a career of helping animals. Discusses ways children can become "animal heroes". Docent is accompanied by a SHARE approved animal ambassador that benefited from an animal hero.
3rd grade: "Dogs!"
A look at the behavior and physical traits of different dog breeds and mixes with a focus on choosing appropriate pets for specific lifestyles.
4th grade: "Living with Our Wild Neighbors"
An introduction to wild animals that share our neighborhoods with us, and the difference between wild and domestic animals. Docent is accompanied by a SHARE approved animal ambassador.

A tour of The Marin Humane Society gives students a first-hand look at compassion in action! They learn about the needs of animals and the enormous amount of time and resources required meeting those needs. At the shelter, children will learn all about the work of the humane society and take a walk around the campus. The will meet adoption and volunteer animals up close and see our staff and volunteers working to help animals and our community. Tours last forty five minutes and include a curriculum follow-up packet.

Scouts can earn a petal, a try-it or activities towards earning a badge or Interest Project.
Curriculum Resources
We have teaching kits covering a wide range of topics (endangered species, horses, cats, dogs, rainforest creatures, etc.) that are available for a loan period of a month. Our education center includes a research library that is open to teachers and students alike. The library features animal related books, magazines, videos, and Web site listings. We can assist teachers with curriculum development utilizing these resources.
